Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth to erupt, usually during your late teen years.

They may become problematic for you as they grow and develop. A large percentage of the Australian population have their wisdom teeth extracted during their lifetime. This makes wisdom teeth removal one of the most performed dental procedures in Australia each year.

Do My Wisdom Teeth Need Removing?

Dr Mavrokokki conducts wisdom teeth removal assessments at Hills Dental Group. His experience and gentle approach have helped many patients. To know if your wisdom teeth need removing, Dr Mavrokokki will do a thorough examination inclusive of x-rays from which he can make a clinical diagnosis.

Not everyone experiences issues with their wisdom teeth. However, for those who do, there are a few common symptoms associated:

  • Pain around the wisdom teeth site
  • Inflamed and tender gums
  • Stiff jaw
  • Sinus problems

Reasons For Removing Wisdom Teeth

Several factors determine if your wisdom teeth need removing. These can include the size of your jaw and if your wisdom teeth become impacted or erupt without issue.

Here are some of the reasons why Dr Mavrokokki may recommend removing your wisdom teeth:

  • Prevent pain caused by impacted wisdom teeth
  • Aid in the correction of teeth overcrowding
  • Reduce the risk of gum infection
  • Prevent the development of cysts associated with impacted wisdom teeth
  • Improve oral hygiene

The procedure for removing wisdom teeth will depend on how impacted your wisdom teeth are. Sometimes they need a simple extraction. Whereas other times they may need a surgical procedure for their removal, which can be performed in hospital or under twilight sedation.

Wisdom Teeth Removal After Care

It’s normal to experience some swelling and discomfort after having your wisdom teeth taken out. The severity and duration of this can vary from one patient to another. Dr Mavrokokki will give you all the information you need for a successful recovery. He will also let you know when you need to come back for a follow-up appointment, enabling him to inspect the extraction site and ensure your healing is on track.

To minimise pain, reduce swelling and aid your recovery process, it can be helpful to:

  • Apply an ice pack
  • Eat soft or liquid food and avoiding chewing on the extraction site
  • Avoid smoking and consuming alcohol for 24 hours
  • Not partake in strenuous activities for the first few days
  • Avoid spitting, rinsing or doing anything that may dislodge the blood clots in the empty tooth socket/s for 24 hours
  • Prop your head up a little bit with a pillow at night
  • Gently rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash after the first 24 hours
  • Take any medicines/pain killers as prescribed by Dr Tony
